Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: Launch Guide (2026)

Tomorrow is the day. After a week of staggered early access, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches in full on October 23, 2026, and if the last few years taught us anything, it’s that a CoD launch is as much a logistics exercise as it is a celebration. When does it unlock in your region? Which edition do you actually need? How much hard drive space should you clear? And is it worth buying day one when Game Pass is — eventually — in the picture?

This is Hot Game Review’s honest launch primer: no hype, no spoilers beyond what’s officially confirmed, and no numbers we can’t source. Everything below is pulled from Activision’s rollout details and the outlets covering them this week. Let’s get you ready.

Modern Warfare 4 release date and unlock times

Unlike previous years, Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t have a single worldwide drop. It rolls out in three stages, and the first two already happened:

Date What unlocked Who got in
October 16, 2026 Single-player campaign early access Digital pre-orders (Standard Digital / Vault Edition)
October 20, 2026 DMZ extraction mode early access The same digital pre-orders
October 23, 2026 Full game, including multiplayer Everyone, on all four platforms

For the full launch, Activision is using midnight local time unlocks — the game becomes playable as October 23 begins in your own time zone, rather than at one simultaneous global moment. Console players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 should see the game go live at 12:00 AM on October 23. PC players can expect the same midnight-local-time treatment, though exact storefront timing on Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app is worth double-checking on the day.

One detail that keeps catching people out: physical disc pre-orders were excluded from early access. Only digital purchases qualified for the campaign and DMZ head starts. If you pre-ordered a physical copy, you’ve been waiting with the rest of us — your patience pays off tomorrow.

Editions and prices: which one should you buy?

There are two editions, and the difference matters more than usual this year:

  • Standard Digital Edition — $69.99. The full game. Digital pre-orders of this edition got campaign and DMZ early access.
  • Vault Edition — $99.99. The full game plus Vault Edition bonus content (operator packs, weapon blueprints and similar extras). You did not need the Vault Edition to get early access — the $69.99 digital edition carried the same head-start perks.

Our honest take: the Vault Edition is for the committed grinder who knows they’ll live in multiplayer for months. If you mainly play the campaign and dabble in multiplayer, the Standard Edition is the smart buy. The extra $30 buys cosmetics and convenience, not gameplay.

PC requirements: clear 115GB before you even think about downloading

PC players, listen up: Modern Warfare 4 requires 115GB of free SSD space at launch, and Activision has warned that post-launch updates will demand more. If you’re sitting on a nearly full drive, now is the time for the painful uninstall decisions. Getting your rig ready is half the battle — our guide on how to download and play Fortnite on PC the right way walks through the same PC-prep hygiene (drivers, storage, background apps) that applies here.

Minimum Recommended (90 fps, high settings)
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 1400 / Intel Core i5-6600 AMD Ryzen 5 3600 / Intel Core i7-8700
GPU AMD RX 470 / Nvidia GTX 970/1060 / Intel Arc A580 AMD RX 6600 XT / Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti / Intel Arc B580
Storage 115GB SSD (required)

The headline here is genuinely player-friendly: a GTX 970-era card still meets the minimum bar, which keeps the game accessible on older rigs. Preloading for PC digital pre-purchases opened on October 15, so if you bought in early, you may already be sitting on the files. During preload you can choose what to install — including whether to pull Warzone alongside the base game. Worth knowing: the new version of Warzone won’t be playable until Season 1, so installing it now doesn’t unlock anything early. While you are getting your rig ready, it is also worth checking your connection setup: our NordVPN vs ExpressVPN head-to-head shows which service holds up better for online play.

The campaign: Korean Peninsula, a new protagonist, and the return of Price

Modern Warfare 4’s story moves to a conflict on the Korean Peninsula. You play as Private Park, a South Korean soldier, as a North Korean invasion kicks off — a notably grounded setup after years of globe-trotting super-soldier plots. Running parallel to that, Captain Price returns in a separate storyline of covert operations beyond the front lines.

The casting headline is Mads Mikkelsen as the main antagonist, “The Archer” — a genuinely exciting get for the series, and a sign Activision is investing in the campaign as a prestige piece rather than a multiplayer onboarding tutorial.

The campaign has been playable since October 16 for digital pre-order players, so first impressions are already circulating. The honest caveat from our side: a strong campaign is great, but CoD lives or dies on its multiplayer servers, map design and post-launch support — and none of that can be judged until tomorrow. We’re holding our final verdict until we’ve played the full package. Once you are in multiplayer, connection quality matters as much as aim: our guide to the best VPN for gaming explains how players cut lag, dodge ISP throttling and keep a stable route to the servers.

DMZ is back — and it got a head start

The extraction shooter mode DMZ returns in Modern Warfare 4, and digital pre-order players have been in it since October 20. For the uninitiated: DMZ drops you into a large map with objectives, AI enemies and other squads, and the whole game is about getting in, looting up and extracting alive. It scratches a very different itch from standard 6v6 multiplayer.

If extraction shooters are new to you, the loop will feel familiar if you’ve played battle royales — positioning, looting and third-partying are the same core skills. Our Fortnite Battle Royale guide covers the survival fundamentals (rotations, when to fight, when to run) that transfer directly to DMZ.

The big platform story: Call of Duty returns to Nintendo

Here’s the detail that deserves more attention than it’s getting: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Nintendo Switch 2, marking Call of Duty’s return to Nintendo hardware after more than a decade away. It’s also a clean generational break — PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are dropped entirely. This is a current-gen-only release: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2.

The Switch 2 version is the great unknown of this launch. Getting a modern CoD running on Nintendo’s handheld-hybrid hardware is a serious technical challenge, and we’ll be watching performance reports closely. If you’re buying on Switch 2, we’d suggest waiting for day-one performance impressions before committing — this is the one version where “wait 48 hours” is genuinely wise advice.

Will Modern Warfare 4 be on Game Pass?

Yes — but not at launch, and not soon. Activision has confirmed Modern Warfare 4 will come to Game Pass in Holiday 2027, roughly a full year after release. No exact date has been announced.

That makes the math simple: if you want to play this year’s CoD in 2026, you have to buy it. The Game Pass wait is long enough that “I’ll just wait” really means skipping the entire launch year — the maps, the meta, the cultural moment. For context on how subscription and free-to-play models change the value equation, our breakdown of Overwatch 2’s free-to-play model is a useful companion read on what “free” actually costs you in a live-service shooter.

Our honest verdict: who should buy on day one?

Let’s be direct, because that’s what this site is for:

  • Buy day one if: you’re a yearly CoD player, you have a squad ready for multiplayer tomorrow, or the campaign premise (Korean Peninsula, Price, Mads Mikkelsen) already sold you. The staggered rollout means servers and day-one patches have had a soft shakedown — a genuinely good sign.
  • Wait a week if: you’re buying on Switch 2 (performance unknowns), you’re on the fence about the $70 price, or you only play casually. Nothing about this launch punishes latecomers except FOMO.
  • Skip (for now) if: you’re a Game Pass subscriber willing to wait until Holiday 2027, or your backlog is already full — October 2026 is stacked, with Final Fantasy Resonance launching this week and more heavy hitters inbound.

The campaign early access experiment is the most interesting thing Activision did this year. Selling the story a week early — and, by all accounts, having it land well — shows confidence. But confidence isn’t a review. We’ll have our full scored review once we’ve put serious hours into multiplayer and DMZ. Until then: clear your SSD, check your edition, and we’ll see you at midnight.
